Hosting Thanksgiving can be a daunting task, but with a well-organized plan, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable holiday. Whether it’s your first time hosting or you’re a seasoned pro, this 10-day Thanksgiving preparation checklist will help you stay on top of everything, from menu planning to last-minute details. Let’s dive into this stress free Thanksgiving plan that will make your holiday gathering a joyful and relaxing experience.
Day 9: Make a Shopping List
Inventory check: Go through your pantry and fridge to see what ingredients you already have and if you have the right quantity for your recipes.
Create a detailed list: Write down everything you need and how much you need to buy, including non-food items like napkins, tablecloths, and Thanksgiving-themed decorations. I love to bring some of the greenery from outside in and start from there building a festive table scape. Having a complete Thanksgiving shopping list will save you multiple trips to the store.
Taking the time to make a thorough shopping list helps prevent any last-minute trips to the store, ensuring you have all the essentials. This step in your Thanksgiving timeline also allows you to include specialty items, like gluten-free or plant-based ingredients, making your menu inclusive for all guests. A well-organized list saves you time and stress during the busy holiday season.
Day 8: Shop for Non-Perishables
Buy non-perishables: Start shopping for items that won’t spoil, such as canned goods, pantry items, spices, baking ingredients, and snacks.
Stock up on essentials: Don’t forget kitchen staples like extra storage containers for leftovers. Keep them close and when clearing the table and quickly start the process of leftovers for everyone. I use a sharpie marker and write names on the lids so as the guests depart, they are happy to take their containers home with them. We always buy a large quantity of containers from our local warehouse store to last all season long because when there are leftovers, guests appreciate a second bite the following day, reminiscing about the fun, the food, and all the great moments you shared together.
Shopping for non-perishable items early in your Thanksgiving preparation helps you avoid the holiday rush. This is also a great time to stock up on specialty ingredients, like gluten-free flour or vegan alternatives, flours, sugar dark and light, vanilla, baking powder and baking soda ensuring you have everything needed for a diverse and inclusive menu.
Day 7: Clean and Organize
Deep clean: Focus on areas where guests will gather, like the living room, dining room, and guest bathroom. Make sure everything is clean and welcoming.
Declutter: Clear out unnecessary items to make space for decorations, serving dishes, and additional seating if needed. When you get out your serving dishes do it with a post-it note pad in hand and as you decide which dish to use for what food, write it on the post-it note and stick it on the dish. This makes everything so much easier when the rush of getting the food plated and served begins. If someone is helping you just direct them to the area where you have the dishes set up. When I pre-set the table I put the serving dishes in place so they are easy to grab fill and replace.
Decorate: Make your home feel fresh and welcoming before guests arrive. Add fall-themed decor, like pumpkins or seasonal flowers, to enhance the festive atmosphere. This extra effort creates a cozy setting that sets the tone for a warm and inviting Thanksgiving gathering.

Day 6: Prep Your Kitchen for a Stress Free Thanksgiving
Organize your kitchen: Ensure your cooking utensils, knives, pots, and pans are ready and easily accessible. This is a great time to sharpen your knives and ensure you have enough mixing bowls, baking sheets, and baking mats. Check your stock of cleaning products and replace what you’ll need.
Check appliances: Double-check that your oven, stove, and other appliances work well. Test your oven’s temperature to avoid surprises on Thanksgiving Day. Calibrating your oven is simple and should be done yearly. Before a big holiday with so much cooking, it’s the perfect time. Now is the time to clean your oven, so remember the two C’s: Clean and Calibrate.

It is the perfect time to label your serving dishes and utensils so you know exactly what you’ll need for each recipe. Consider quickly inventorying your kitchen essentials and appliances, ensuring everything from your hand mixer to your food processor is in good working order.

Confirm RSVPs: Reach out to any guests who haven’t responded to confirm their attendance.
Plan seating arrangements: Decide where everyone will sit, especially if you have a large group or children who might need a separate table.

Store properly: Ensure you have enough space in your fridge and freezer for perishable items. Keep the turkey in its original packaging and store it at the bottom of the fridge to avoid cross-contamination.

If you want to save time, consider ordering your turkey from a local butcher or grocery store. This step in your Thanksgiving checklist ensures you won’t be left searching for last-minute ingredients.
Day 3: Start Cooking
Prepare make-ahead dishes: Begin cooking or prepping dishes that can be made in advance, like pies and cranberry sauce. These dishes will save you time on Thanksgiving Day.

Planning these tasks ahead is the secret to a truly stress free Thanksgiving.
Day 2: Set the Table
Decorate: Set your dining table with tablecloths, centerpieces, and place settings. Consider using fall-themed decorations to create a festive atmosphere.

One of our favorite ways to set the table: Start with a thick roll of wrapping paper and then build around the theme. There are two ways to do this:
- With a 36-inch wide roll of thick wrapping paper, roll the paper down the center of the table and tape with double-stick tape underneath the table on both ends.
- With your favorite roll: Cut the wrapping paper the width of the table plus eight inches. Place it crossways from chair to chair and tape it using double-sided tape under the table top to secure it. If you have four chairs on each side, you will need to cut four pieces of paper. Cut one additional piece the same size and then cut it in half for the two head seats.
Day 1: Final Preparations
Finish cooking: Complete any remaining cooking tasks, like roasting the turkey and making gravy.
Last-minute cleaning: On the final day, a quick clean-up and finishing touches in the kitchen help set the stage for a stress-free celebration. Focus on tidying up common areas and putting away any clutter. By keeping everything organized, you can fully enjoy your guests’ company and savor the delicious meal you’ve prepared.
Prepare your appetizers: In the morning, while your turkey is roasting, prepare your appetizers, plate them, cover them, and place them in the fridge. Think about quick appetizers that don’t need to be heated to enjoy. In addition, think about how filling your appetizers are. If you follow the French rule, appetizers should be light so everyone can enjoy the beautiful feast you have created.
Make two Charcuterie boards:
- The first is with fruit, berries, and grapes and a goat cheese roll wrapped in cranberries.
- Your second charcuterie is meat and cheese. Begin with three cheeses (one strong, one mild, and one hard). Add salami, prosciutto, olives, peppers, and nuts. Serve with crackers, crostini, baguette slices, or bread for petit fours (small squares).
